WhatsApp is a cross-platform messing application used by smartphones. It allows users to communicate instant messages and share media via 3G or WiFi with other users on the platform. Back in may 2011 WhatsApp had a security breach when hackers realized that messages were being transmitted unencrypted via plain text which left accounts open for hi-jacking. WhatsApp finally released a security update for this problem and the system became locked down.

- A Phone running WhatsApp (iPhone, Android, Nokia, Blackberry etc)
The first hack im going to talk about will spoof WhatsApp and have it think you are somebody else allowing you to communicate under an alternative name. This hack works by tricking the WhatsApp Verification Servers by sending a spoofed request for an authorisation code intended for an alternative phone. This method is also known to work on several other IM applications based on iOS, Symbian & Android devices.
Hack 1
Install WhatsApp on your device
WhatsApp now starts a counter where it sends a verification message to its servers. If this verification fails after a specific time then WhatsApp offers alternative methods of verification. A message can be blocked by changing the message center number or pushing the phone into Airplane mode.
WhatsApp now offers an alternative method of verification
Choose verify through SMS and fill in your email address. Once you click to send the SMS click cancel to terminate the call for authorisation to the WhatsApp server.
Next we need to do some SMS-Spoofing
There are numerous ways of doing this for free. A quick google search will pull up a vast amount of services which can spoof email addresses.
If you are using an iPhone use the following details in the SMS spoofer application.
To: +447900347295
From: +(Country code)(mobile number)
Message: (your email address)
If you are using another device then check your outbox and copy the message details into the spoofer application and send the spoofed verification.
You will now receive messages intended for the spoofed number on your mobile device and you can communicate with people under the spoofed number.
Hack 2
The second attack I’m going to talk about is a little bit more professional. For users who can pull of MITM (Man in the Middle) Attacks this is a sure way to rake in data from a public network. I came across the script at the 0×80 blog so i I tried it on several public networks in Dublin (thanks to the karma code). The amount of data you can pull in from people sitting around you in a short amount of time is quite unreal. The code is written in Python so its nice and simple to work with and edit to make it work for similar chat applications.
You will also need to parse the traffic so check this link: http://www.secdev.org/projects/scapy/
Before you have a look at the code you may want to note that WhatsApp blurts out even more information for us to see. Doing a MITM Attack and peeking at the packets we can see that WhatsApp prints the mobile number and the name of the user your target is speaking with. This is important to note this because this data can be used for some social engineering (calling the person to pull more information from them) or by checking web resources such as Facebook or LinkedIn to find their address, email accounts, websites and what ever else your hunting for.

Did you push your phone out of coverage to stop the initial verification message? The only way to put a Nokia E63 into Flight Mode is to reset the phone so you will have to push it out of coverage either using a dead spot you are aware of, forcefully changing the network to one which doesn’t work or using an app to block network connections.

the first method, if you try it using an account you want 2 hack and want to intercept messages coming to that number would the other person find out that you are getting their messages?

No the user would have no idea your are intercepting messages HOWEVER if you start to mess about by replying to people you could get caught.
WhatsApp stores data both on the server and locally so if the users phone is after deleting a conversation log and it wants to retrieve it then it will call to the WhatsApp message server and pull down a log of a conversation. If you are after injecting your own messages into that conversation like “fuck you, i hate you” then the user will realize its after being hijacked and they can request WhatsApp to delete their account. In the end though you can just re-register as that user again and keep snooping on conversations.
If you overkill it WhatsApp could investigate where the data is coming from (IP Logs) and you could be reported to local authorities. They could also instruct your network operator to investigate whats happening and you could have the phone company down your back as well!
So to sum up, if you plan to fuck around then don’t bother doing it, if you just want to spy on conversations and data then go for it. Don’t forget its illegal though so really you shouldn’t do it

That happened to me when i tried to use my old whatsapp number on my 2nd phone. Whatsapp de-registered my other account on my old phone.
I’m just calling you out based on this comment ‘No the user would have no idea your are intercepting messages’. I’ve yet to try this hack out myself, so i’m looking forward to your input. =)
They shouldn’t be logged out WhatsApp is built on XMPP which supports multiple sessions. The only reason i can see why it would log out is because its a specific phone error (not system wide) and its not happily running with multi sessions on the users device.
I have successfully pulled off this trick on my Nokia E63 consecutively with no issues and I’m aware of others who have also managed this trick. It could be that I’m just lucky at which verification server I’m connecting to if it verifies with specific servers (continental or sub-continental) – Im not sure how many verif. servers the WhatsApp company use.

Just reread these comments, had missed this one. Exactly what seems to have happened for me, it’s deactivated the original user’s account on their iPhone. We are sharing the same internet (multi-sim) which could perhaps be the reason?
I wonder if i tried one of your hacks rather than having done it officially it would allow both to work at once? Rather pants you can’t have it running on two different devices, I have an iPhone (without SIM) and an android and it’s quite possible I would want to have my one Whatsapp account on both devices so as not to have to always carry both around…

WhatsApp will offer an alternative method but you must push it out of coverage. This includes both WiFi & 3G Networks and you will have to do this very fast! I suggest using a deadspot in your home or garden to pull this trick off.
If that fails you can always do some social trickery and have it verified by a WhatsApp system operator via email. I’ve done this in the past on my own account several times due to errors when updating WhatsApp.

It could be different. WhatsApp could very well have continental or sub-continental servers (like northern europe, eastern europe etc) to handle the incoming and outgoing requests. Large companies such as Google & Yahoo do this to off-oad data according to population and to speed up ping times.
Maybe do some DNS hunting or sub-domain hunting and you might find further information about the WhatsApp servers.

As for the status updates I’m presuming thats handled locally and it just announces it to other users through the server. I wouldn’t worry about it jeopardizing the crack. Friends of the target will just think the target likes to update their status back and forth quite a bit

You would need to delete it on your phone. Your account will stay active on the WhatsApp servers preserving your data. You just need to clear it locally on your device. Try uninstalling & reinstalling. If that fails then do a hard reset on your phone.

hi what version of whatsapp are you using (for symbian). I am using whatsapp v2.6.61 on a nokia c6-00 and cant get the hack to work. First i tried registering the desired number by putting the phone in offline mode right at the begining, but it says phone offline try again in online mode. Then I tried in it online mode but as soon as the msg is being sent i put in offline mode so the sms didnt come (and no sms in the outbox too). The countdown timer completes but once it completes it starts from the begining again. I dont get any options for the email thingy. Seeing that you do have a symbian phone can you pls tell me which version you use. That might solve the problem. Any help will be deeply appreciated.

Hi please help I’m getting as far as requesting a call there are no other options has whatsapp been updated to stop all the ha*king. Ive tried emailing them and theyve just told me to read the FAQ and the problem should be in there.
Ive even tried the call option and put the phone into flight mode but to no avail its been saying requesting a call now for the last half hour.
I was told today this hack does not work anymore when it comes to hacking or hijacking someones account because whatsapp changed its security a while back so for those of you that say you were able to hijack someones account it probably is not true . atleast not anymore you need the verification code so unless you have access to the number you are using I dont see it happening.

I did this – well actually managed to avoid all the messing about by simply aherm accessing the target’s physical phone and sending the msg directly to it. Problem is, it would now seem that person’s Whatsapp no longer works – as in, despite having internet connection it acts as though it doesn’t have access and won’t allow this person to receive or send messages, and they appear as offline.
Suppose this means Whatsapp have updated to only allow 1x installation of the app per phone number?? Worried that if they remove and reinstall the app well I’ll be cut off, obviously… Grrr. Another note, if they want to reinstall it’ll cost them, looks like the official app now costs money (was free when i downloaded last year).

I don’t think so, I tested it out trying to ‘hack’ my own number before trying the target.
I installed Whatsapp on my iPhone, entered my phone number (couldn’t do it in Airplane Mode because that then shuts off my internet connection which is needed to use Whatsapp – a possible solution could be to remove my SIM and connect to home Wifi? Will try that later)
It sent the verification code to my phone. It then makes you wait an hour before it lets you try sending the code again.
Waited the hour and tried again, with my mobile phone in Airplane Mode (obviously this is not possible if you don’t have the physical phone with you) and when the verification code timed out, it only offered to “CALL ME”, no email option
So unless it would give an alternative verification method with the SIM card removed (which I doubt as it’s a SmartSIM = internet only) it seems to me they’ve sealed up this loophole
I will see about giving Hack 2 a go later, but I haven’t a clue about this sort of thing, still…
Yep, I haven’t a clue about MITM attacks, lol. Just tried to see if I could do anything but no luck. I’m usually very good at “learning on the job” (jailbroke my own iPhone having absolutely no experience in anything of the sort). However I can’t understand the basics of the Hack 2.
We’ll just have to be ethical. I managed to hijack my target’s number and obviously right away they realised they weren’t able to use the service any more. Barely any msgs came through in the time I had control over the account, and after 1 day the person has reinstalled Whatsapp and I now no longer have access. C’est la vie, we shall have to be ethical…

When I try to access the app. it requires a 3 digit code. The “call me” button does not work. Thank you so much for your advice – but it’s like it’s just not working for me and I could really use some help. When I install whatsapp I put the phone as offline and then it asks me about a phone number (and here I put the other person’s number) and then I press continue and it says ‘do you wanna connect to WLAN twice (where I say no) and then it says that the verification has failed (without ever giver other choices). I was really hoping you could help me a bit so it could work – I really need it.

Hacking whatsapp is not impossible a task as it seems. All the hackable options given above have been outdated since those vulnerabilities have been patched over the months. However, the XMPP protocol have reported some flows which have not yet been patched basically cos those code vulnerabilities are in the wild. Taking a closer look at how whatsapp operates once does not need to be extremely “geek” to be able to intercept whatsapp messages. From my research and playing around with the system, I found out that, when I intercept a message from my friends whatsapp with my fone, I am only able to read the messages coming to him and I cant seem to read whatever he sends to the person… I believe I know what is causing that and its going to be very trick in pulling this off.

I like this hack thing over here. I haven’t tried it and am not really interested in it at the mom. What I’m interested in is having a crack at the real-time status. I’ve been bugged by my gf about being online and not talking to her…and on my iPhone I don’t have a clue when I show as online and when not, although it seems that whenever I put the phone on standby it does go to the “last seen on….” status. Now sometimes I’m in a position where sometimes I can read her message but cannot really reply….like when I’m in a meeting or something. This bugs her into thinking that I might have been chatting someone else….and no explaining could ever get her to understand…..so my final resort before quitting is to make my real-time status stay at “last seen on……” or something else other than online. Sorry for the long write-up but I have been trying to get down to this for some time. Unfortunately the smart”er” Android and iPhone (like mine) killed our privacy….nothing compared to what Nokia’s Symbian 2.1 could offer back when things where as simple as possible yet advanced to make life easier.
Usually, if I want to read a whatsapp message on my nokia without triggering a time status update, I put the phone in an offline mode before reading the message. When its in an offline mode, it cant access the network and hence no staus update is registered. When done reading the message, I exit whatsapp, put the phone in back on network mode so that I can receive other incoming whatsapp messages.
Find a way to do something like that on your Iphone.

i disconnected my phone line with the provider, who in turn, reactivated the line and sold it to some guy.
once this guy opened whatsapp, he literally got all my contacts and started bothering my friends and family with disturbing messages, and the provider cannot do anything knowing that it is from the whatsapp server side that all information will go to the line when activated and installed whatsapp again.
